Down represents the best-case scenario here: A supergroup that stands so tall on its own merits that it no longer even feels like a supergroup. Their 1995 debut, ‘NOLA,’ is a modern metal classic, and the band, led by Phil Anselmo, Pepper Keenan and Jimmy Bower, continues to squeeze out first-rate sludge metal to this day.
